Symbols in Excel for Mac?
Q. How do you add symbols in Excel:Mac?
A. This has since changed in Office 2011 for Mac.. read the comments below!

You can! Double click the cell. Go to View, then Object Palette. Click on symbols and a chart comes up.
The one for double clicking the cell was very helpful to me thanks, but the easy way is t click where you want to insert the symbol, go to toolbox, click object palette, then choose symbol.
I can't find the object pallete either at the View menu. However, I managed to insert a check mark by choosing the Insert Menu and click on Symbols. It acts like the Character Map in Windows.

what about accents? ie, the symbol used to rep. wavenumbers.
Thats a good point.. I tried this and I couldn't figure it out :(
hold option and press a key - it will insert the equivalent symbol; for example [option](V) will insert a check mark ect.
Still haven t found the character pallete however...?

You mean like special symbols (&%$...) or these kind of symbols: http://www.excel-aid.com/excel-symbols-highlighting-cells-with-icon-sets.html ? Or maybe even stuff like the rupee sign? Im sorry, im not a native speaker so its hard for me to differentiate between those.
